In 2012, although the air conditioning industry suffered from electricity shortages, post-earthquake reconstruction demand led to steady levels of air conditioner shipments. According to statistics from the Japan Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Industry Association (JRAIA), domestic shipments of RACs in calendar 2012 recorded a total of 8,486,555 units, up 2.5% over 2011.
