1. Overview for World Chiller and Air-side Equipment Market
The 2016 world air conditioner market scale was US$ 92.6 billion. Of this, residential and light commercial air conditioners accounted for about 60% of the market, and the remaining 40% consisted of unitary, chillers, and air-side products. Breaking this down in more detail, the market share of chillers came to 8.1% and air-side products came to 7.6%, for a combined total of 15.7% of the market. According to BSRIA, world chiller demand in 2016 approached US$ 7.5 billion, down 3.2% compared with 2015.

2. Centrifugal Chiller
According to BSRIA, world centrifugal chiller demand surpassed US$ 2.1 billion in 2016, a decline of 1.0% over the previous year. However, demand has increased by about 140% on a value bases over the last decade. This is because centrifugal chiller demand in China tripled during this period due to rapid urban development, which has expanded world total demand. Now China is the largest centrifugal chiller market in the world, accounting for about a third of global centrifugal chiller demand.

3. Air-cooled Chillers
World demand for air-cooled chillers in 2016 was nearly US$ 3.2 billion, a 0.4% decrease over 2015. Air-cooled chillers are classified into cooling-only chillers and air-source heat pumps. Cooling-only air-cooled chillers dominate the U.S. market; however air-source heat pumps take considerable market share in Japan and China, accounting for 60% and 70% of the markets, respectively.

4. Water-cooled Chillers
World demand for water-cooled chillers was nearly US$ 1.5 billion in 2016, a decrease of 5% compared to the previous year. Water-cooled screw chillers have been used for replacement of small/ medium centrifugal chillers. They have comparable performance and costs to existing centrifugal chillers in the capacity range between 100 to 500 tons. However, ever since the spread of small oil-free centrifugal chillers, they are competing with each other in this capacity range.

5. Absorption Chillers
Absorption chiller-heaters, differing from electric vapor compression chillers, make chilled or hot water using thermal energy. Global demand for absorption chiller-heaters was US$ 687.3 million in 2016, a decrease of 9.5% in value over the previous year. Demand over the past decade has not changed in value, but has decreased as a percentage of total chillers. The major markets are China, Japan, and South Korea, which account for a combined 70% of the world market.
