1. Revision of International Standard on Refrigerant Flammability Testing
In a project of the Japanese New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization (NEDO), the National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology (AIST) established a safety assessment method for mildly flammable refrigerants with low global warming potential (GWP). Based on this method, the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) has revised its international standard on the safety of household and similar electrical appliances.

2. CAREL’s Innovations Hailed around the World
During Mostra Convegno Expocomfort (MCE) held in Italy in March 2018, JARN interviewed Luigi Nalini, chief executive officer (CEO) of CAREL. Receiving JARN’s interview, Luigi Nalini emphasized that CAREL is promoting its capability to use natural refrigerants, especially in Europe where there is strong demand for these refrigerants. In the refrigeration sector, CAREL decided to offer not only controls but also brushless direct current (BLDC) variable speed compressors, in particular adopting CO2 and propane (R290).

3. İSKİD Announces Turkey’s 2017 AC Market Situation
According to İSKİD, 800,000 air conditioner units were sold in 2016 on the domestic market, and that number increased to 1 million units in 2017. In addition, another 1 million units were exported in 2017.
İSKİD Chairman Taner Yonet announced that compared with other Mediterranean countries, in Turkey, growth of the air conditioning market should increase by 20% this year, due to high demand in the domestic and export markets.

4. Trane World’s Largest Undersea Tunnel Stays Cool
Eurotunnel released official data demonstrating energy savings of 33% after the first season of operating a new cooling system for maintaining requisite temperatures in the landmark Channel Tunnel.  The system contains four Series E CenTraVac large-capacity (2,600 to 14,000 kW) chillers from Trane. Two of the chillers have been operational in Sangatte, France, since 2016, and the remaining units at Shakespeare Cliff, the United Kingdom, have been operational since late October 2017.

5. Chinese AC Sales Growth Decelerates in 1Q of 2018
According to All View Consulting (AVC), retail sales of air conditioners in 2018 are expected to be 53.13 million units, down 5.4% year-on-year, or RMB 186 billion (US$ 29 billion), down 3.7% year-on-year.  From the end of last year to the beginning of this year, the growth of air conditioner sales presented a year-on-year slowdown. Taking into account factors such as real estate regulation, capacity expansion, and increased competition, the Chinese air conditioning industry entered an adjustment period this year.
