1. Ductless ACs Boom in Atlanta — Report on the 2019 AHR Expo
During an action-packed three days spanning January 14 to 16, the 2019 AHR Expo was held in Atlanta, Georgia. At this year’s AHR Expo, once again, many ductless air conditioners were exhibited by Japanese, Chinese, and South Korean manufacturers. In these Asian manufacturers’ booths, there were also many VRFs exhibited alongside mini-splits. VRF was once a segment dominated by Japanese manufacturers, but now South Korean and Chinese manufacturers also highlighted their VRF products at their booths.

2. 2018 AC Market Trends in the Southern Hemisphere – Latin American
Latin American air conditioner demand increased by 0.3% in 2018. Brazil, Argentina, and Mexico were the top three markets in the region, with a combined market scale of 4.87 million units in 2018. A large portion of the air conditioners sold in Brazil and Argentina is produced locally due to high import duties, but Chinese products are dominant in other Latin American countries. As China is seeing an increasing influence in this region, Chinese manufacturers showed strong performance in Latin America. According to China Customs, air conditioners exported from China to this region indicated 9% year-on-year growth in 2018.

3. EUREKA Roadshow 2018 Highlights the Importance of Dialogue between Member States and EU
On December 14, 2018, the RUREKA Roadshow took place in Romania. Participants discussed how the HVAC&R sector can simultaneously meet the demands to deliver on sustainability and climate change priorities, whilst embracing the possibilities offered by digitalization.  In 2019, the flagship EUREKA summit will take place in Bruges, Belgium, on June 11–12 with a focus on how the HVAC&R sector can harness the United Nation’s Sustainable Development Goals.

4. High Inventory May Become Normal in China’s AC Industry
When hot sales are seen in the air conditioner market, there will be two phenomena. One is an expansion of production capacity and the other is high inventory volume. Currently, the air conditioner industry in China has a total annual production volume of up to 180 million units. Meanwhile, as of October 2018, China’s air conditioner industry had an inventory of up to 42.6 million units according to ChinaIOL.com.

5. Toshiba Carrier Identifies the Potential of Solstice N41 as an Alternative to R410A
On January 9, Honeywell announced that Toshiba Carrier has identified the potential of Solstice N41 (R466A) as an alternative to R410A, the heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) industry’s current standard in variable refrigerant flow (VRF) systems.  The findings were presented at the 13th International Symposium on New Refrigerants and Environmental Technology in Kobe, Japan.
