1. Changing the Game with Heat Pumps — Review of ISH 2019 in Germany
ISH, the world’s leading biennial trade fair focusing on the responsible management of water and energy in buildings, was held from March 11 to 15 at Messe Frankfurt in Germany. ISH 2019 attracted around 190,000 visitors from 161 countries. A total of 2,532 global leaders from 57 countries exhibited their product arrays including boilers as well as key components and parts. Backed by high environmental awareness, the European heat pump market is expected to further develop in the directions of greater energy efficiency, stronger performance, and lower-GWP refrigerants.

2. Honeywell’s Strategy: Put the Right Refrigerant in the Right Application
In June 2018, Honeywell unveiled the new non-flammable (A1) refrigerant Solstice N41 (ASHRAE provisional number R466A) as an alternative to R410A. Then, in September, the company announced the commercial availability of the mildly flammable (A2L), low-global warming potential (GWP) refrigerant called Solstice L41y (ASHRAE number R452B). During 2019 AHR Expo held in January in the United States, JARN interviewed George Koutsaftes, president, Advanced Materials, Honeywell, to learn about Honeywell’s strategy for refrigerant promotion.

4. Centrifugal Chiller Market Enters an Era of All around Competition
According to the 2018 China Commercial Air Conditioner Market Report released by Aircon.com, centrifugal chillers accounted for 5.1% of the total commercial air conditioning market scale in China in 2018, indicating 4.2% year-on-year growth. Looking at previous data, it is noticeable that centrifugal chillers have lagged far behind with their market scale and growth rate from variable refrigerant flow (VRF) systems, unitary systems, and modular chillers. In particular, their application rate in civil projects has been dropping. In the past, centrifugal chillers were chosen in many projects which now tend to choose VRFs or even combined solutions including screw chillers and VRFs.
