1. Trade War Accelerates and Supply Chain Heads South
The intensifying trade war between the United States and China not only casts a shadow over the global economy, but also seriously impacts both the supply and demand sides of the air conditioning industry. Manufacturers, retailers, and consumers face pressure to share the 25% tariff increase. At the same time, the air conditioner supply chain has begun or is about to start changing. The United States imports the largest number of China’s air conditioners, accounting for 24.9% of China’s total air conditioner exports on a unit basis.

2. Trane and STULZ USA Announce Strategic OEM Supply Sales Agreement
The new agreement will help strengthen and expand both companies’ market positions in North America, with STULZ USA manufacturing a range of products for Trane as an OEM supplier, and Trane selling various STULZ-branded products. Trane will gain access to STULZ USA’s full portfolio of Computer Room Air Handling (CRAH) and Computer Room Air Conditioners (CRAC), along with split systems DX units for temperature control and dehumidification in indoor farming and grow environments.

4. European Heat Pump Markets Show Double-digit Growth for Fourth Year in a Row
On May 15 and 16, 2019, the European Heat Pump Association (EHPA) gathered more than 200 industry experts to discuss latest developments in the market and to assess how heat pumps could pursue their contribution to a brighter future in Europe. With 11.8 million units installed across Europe, heat pump technology has quickly developed into a cornerstone of the European heating mix. Slightly below 10% of all buildings are today heated by a heat pump.

5. Retail Sales of Air Conditioners in China Grow in Q1
In the first quarter of 2019, retail sales of air conditioners in China increased by 4.1% year on year to 11.41 million units on a volume basis and increased by 1.7% year on year to RMB 41.7 billion (US$ 6 billion) on a value basis.  In the second and third quarters of 2019, the retail sales value is expected to fall by 6.5% and the volume to fall by 1.7% year on year. These numbers are not expected to begin growing again until the fourth quarter. In the fourth quarter, retail sales of air conditioners are expected to increase by 1% year on year on a volume basis and by 1.5% year on year on a value basis.
