1. World ATW Heat Mump Market Overview 2018
In 2018, global air-to-water (ATW) heat pump demand with the exception of China reached 981,200 units, rising 10% year on year. The major markets are concentrated in China, Japan, and Europe, accounting for 56.6%, 21%, and 16.3% of the global market respectively. The global ATW market has continued to maintain stable growth. Europe saw the highest growth rate, and Japan enjoyed stable growth. Rapid growth was attributed to accelerated phase-out of oil-fired boilers and low-efficiency gas-fired boilers in Europe.

2. Europe
JARN estimates that the European ATW heat pump market reached 368,900 units in 2018, growing 14.3% over last year. Of this total, France accounted for 16.2%, followed by Germany and Italy. Together, these three countries account for nearly 70% of the entire European ATW heat pump market. France is the largest market in Europe, accounting for 50% of the total European market. In Germany, heat pumps are now widely accepted. There has been a consensus for consumers to choose ATW heat pumps for newly built buildings, and for this reason, boiler manufacturers in Germany have started to produce ATW heat pumps to enhance their market competitiveness. In Germany, monobloc product types accounted for over 50% of the total market.

3. Japan
Japan has a mature ATW heat pump market which has a long sales history. According to statistics from the Japan Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Industry Association (JRAIA), Japan’s ATW heat pump market in 2018 reached 475,000 units, up 8.8% over the previous year. Japanese manufacturers are targeting not only the European ATW market, but also are developing in Australia and even in the U.S. market.

4. China
Affected by the overall economic conditions and decreasing subsidies from the government in 2018, sales of residential ATW heat pumps decreased by 30% compared with the previous year and China’s ATW market reached 1.28 million units. Sales of commercial ATW heat pumps were relatively good, growing 6.7% from the previous year.  The ATW heat pump market, which has grown rapidly thanks to policy stimuli in recent years, has been greatly challenged. China’s electricity price is not cheap, and consumers in North China are complaining that operating costs are too high to bear. How to maintain the sustainable development of the ATW heat pump market has become an important topic in the industry.

5. The United States
In 2018, the U.S. market scale of ATW cylinder-integrated heat pump models was 95,000 units. Monobloc or split-type ATW heat pumps are not very common in the U.S. market.  The annual sales volume of the residential water heater market is large with 8-10 million units, while the share of heat pump water heaters in the U.S. market is small.  The U.S. market presents great business potential for the ATW heat pump market.
