1. Smart Air Conditioners
A smart air conditioner refers to a type of air conditioner that can be remotely controlled and its operating conditions checked, at home or in an office, via a smartphone by means of IoT technology. Concretely, such use becomes possible by incorporating Wi-Fi functions into the unit and downloading the designated application software onto a smartphone. Recently, these remote control and monitoring functions have been incorporated in other types of home electric appliances such as washing machines and refrigerators, and these are collectively called smart home electrical appliances.

2. Italian air conditioning market
The Italian air conditioning market reached approximately €1.51 billion (US$ 1.68 billion) in 2018, up from around €1.36 billion (US$ 1.51 billion) in 2017, with an average growth rate of 11%. In 2019, the market seems to be positive again, according to the first quarter results compared with the same quarter of 2018.  In the first quarter of this year, the direct expansion (DX) air conditioner market composed of single splits, multi-splits, and variable refrigerant flow (VRF) systems grew by approximately 9.1% on a volume basis and by 13% on a value basis according to an Assoclima press release published on May 10, 2019.

3. TICA Accelerates International Strategy with Oil-free Technology from Smardt
TICA Climate Solutions is a China-based specialist in the clean environment and thermal energy sectors. In October 2018, TICA set up a joint venture (JV) company with Smardt, a Canada-based global leading oil-free centrifugal chiller manufacturer. JARN interviewed Jiang Li, president of TICA, and Roger Richmond-Smith, founder of Smardt, to hear about their strengths and synergies.

4. Mitsubishi Electric Trane HVAC US Introduces JP Model 115 V Heat Pump
July 18, 2019, Mitsubishi Electric Trane HVAC US (METUS) introduced two MSZ/MUZ-JP model 115 V heat pumps. Part of the METUS M-Series product lineup, each 115 V heat pump system utilizes one breaker spot in an electrical panel versus the typical two breaker spots. A single zone system, the MSZ-JP model indoor unit and corresponding MUZ-JP model outdoor unit are ideal for residential and light commercial applications, such as hotels and restaurants.

5. The Japan Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Industry Association (JRAIA) Strongly Advocates the Safe Use of R290 Refrigerant
JARN interviewed Kazuhiro Hasegawa, assistant councilor of the Engineering Department of JRAIA, and Yoshihisa Sakamoto, chair of the Built-in Refrigerated Display Cabinet Risk Assessment WG3 of JRAIA and senior engineer of Sanden Retail Systems. As JRAIA has been involved in risk assessments of flammable refrigerants for many years, JARN asked about its views on using flammable refrigerants in equipment.
