1. New Toshiba Carrier Plant in Europe to Offer Local-fit Products— ATW Production to Start in Poland
On January 21, 2020, Toshiba Carrier announced the establishment of Toshiba Carrier Air-Conditioning Europe in Gniezno, a mid-western city of Poland. With approximately 37,000-m2 land area and approximately 17,000-m2 floor area, the new subsidiary will be dedicated to manufacturing and sales of commercial air conditioning and hot water supply equipment and is scheduled to begin operation before the end of 2020.

2. New Players Heat up China’s RAC Price War
According to industry data, the major RAC brands dominated the market with an 82.4% share in refrigeration year 2019 (RY; end of July 2019), while small and medium sized brands further decreased their shares.
In addition to the traditional players, there are two newcomers from across the industry border: Xiaomi, China’s mobile phone giant, and Suning, China’s home appliance retail giant. They released Mijia and Jiwu Biu series, respectively, which are high-end smart air conditioners with low prices, not only attracting consumers but also exerting a big impact on the pricing system of RACs in China.

3. AHR Expo Features Measures to Prevent Global Warming — Report on the 2020 AHR Expo
AHR Expo, the world’s largest HVAC&R exhibition, was held on February 3–5, 2020 at the Orange County Convention Center in Orlando, Florida, the United States. Judging by exhibits at this year’s AHR Expo, the shift from fossil fuel heating to heat pump heating seems likely to occur in order to prevent global warming. In the United States, heat pumps are used, but with a low penetration ratio at present, and heating using fossil fuels remains mainstream.  In recent years, expectations for heat pumps have increased, thanks to an improvement in their heating performance in low-temperature environments and the increasing numbers of states and cities trying to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions.

4. Ubiblue to Pursue and Build on Pioneering Work Conducted by Cooltech
Ubiblue is to take over the projects and developmental work in the field of magnetic refrigeration previously conducted by Cooltech. Over 300 patents have been filed by Cooltech, and Ubiblue will have a license to exploit these inventions.

5. Musings on HVAC&R-- AC- and Heat Pump-related Books around the World
Learning from the companies and organizations and learning from experience are important, but learning from books is fast and accurate. There are many books with actual examples. Fortunately, the spread of the Internet has made it possible to obtain and read a variety of books around the world. For people involved in air conditioning, it is not a waste of time to look at a book related to air conditioning and heat pumps on an Internet sales site at least once. Surely a new desire for knowledge and ambition will be born.
