1. Technical trends for Scroll Compressor
For more than 35 years since their initial commercialization, scroll compressors have been widely used as the core part of air conditioning and refrigeration (AC&R) products such as residential and commercial air conditioners, automobile air conditioners, chillers, and refrigeration systems. Currently, scroll compressor is widely used around the world, with capacities ranging from 0.75 to 45 kW depending on the application, and is being produced on a scale of more than 14 million units per year.

2. Technical trends for Centrifugal & Screw Compressors
The centrifugal compressor has a history of nearly 100 years since it was developed in 1922 in the United States, and now is core equipment used for large chillers and process cooling and heating in industrial applications. The screw compressor of the rotary displacement type was developed by LST– currently, SRM – in the 1930s, and this model was applied for the first time to air compressors. This type of compressor was used for refrigeration applications in the 1960s. Almost at the same time, semi-hermetic screw compressors for water-cooled chillers were developed.

3. Toshiba Carrier Develops World’s Largest Triple Rotary Compressor
In December 2019, Toshiba Carrier announced in a press release that it has newly developed a large-capacity triple-rotary compressor and incorporated it in the company’s high efficiency variable refrigerant flow (VRF) series. The newly developed large capacity triple-rotary compressor has two features: It is the world’s largest capacity direct current (DC) rotary compressor with a triple cylinder, and is driven by a dual-state inverter, a world first for air conditioning use.

4. UK Spin-out’s Modeling Saves Energy in Global Compressor Industry
SCORG modeling and design software developed by PDM Analysis, a spin-out of City, University of London, is designed for screw compressors, expanders and pumps used in many industrial applications including AC&R. Data analyzed by SCORG allow compressor manufacturers to design more efficient systems, and reduces their energy consumption and carbon emissions. Refrigeration contributes to about 25% of total energy usage in the United States in summer.  Compressors are used in all refrigeration and air conditioning systems.
