2. Japanese and Korean AC Manufacturers Doing Best in U.S. Market Aiming at Post-Corona Era
The U.S. market had been importing a large number of ductless air conditioners from China, which are subject to high tariffs since early 2018 due to the U.S.-China trade conflict. Accordingly, China’s exports of air conditioners to the United States are decreasing, with a 28% decrease in the first quarter of 2020.
In this context, Japanese manufacturers exported ductless air conditioners to the U.S. market from their factories in Southeast Asian countries such as Thailand to meet the growing demand for ductless air conditioners. South Korean manufacturers have also strengthened exports of their air conditioners from Southeast Asia and South Korea

The lockdown has been extended in phases till May 31, with progressive relaxation in each phase. Shops selling RACs and other consumer durables have been allowed to open in most areas from May 18. But customer footfall has yet to pick up. Manufacturers are expecting negative growth in sales this year. Most of the peak summer period has seen zero sales due to the lockdown.

5. Musings on HVAC&R-Mutually Influencing Factors Governing RAC Selection
What type of air conditioning systems will be installed when building a house? In Japanese model houses, ducted-type air conditioning systems and floor heating air conditioning systems, as well as built-in indoor units are often installed. However, most air conditioning systems that are selected when actually building a house in Japan are split-type room air conditioners (RACs). The key factors influencing sales of split-type RACs are: 1) cooling and heating capacity; 2) price; 3) specifications such as noise level and additional functions; 4) design and size; 5) efficiency related to running costs and electricity bills; and others such as workability and quality. These factors are not unrelated, and they influence each other.
