1. New Report on Environmental Dumping of Obsolete RACs in Africa
Reported by Ph.D. Stephen O. Andersen, director of Research, Institute for Governance and Sustainable Development (IGSD)
A compelling new report finds that about 35% of the room air conditioners (RACs) sold in Africa have energy efficiency ratings of less than 3.0 W/W and use obsolete R22 and R410A refrigerants scheduled for phase-out and phase-down respectively under the Montreal Protocol on Substances that Deplete the Ozone Layer. It is important to appreciate that African markets are rapidly organizing to stop environmental dumping and important for every international RAC manufacturing company to do their part to support this ambition. This can help realize, in Africa, many of these companies’ and their associations’ responsible refrigerant-use policies.
