1. GLOBAL REFRIGERATION MARKET - 2020
JARN estimates that the global refrigeration market value in 2019 reached US$ 104.8 billion including services such as installation and maintenance, an increase of about 4.2% compared with 2018. Of the total, commercial applications recorded US$ 68.2 billion, industrial applications amounted to US$ 30.9 billion, and transportation amounted to US$ 5.8 billion. In terms of regions, North America is the largest market in the world with a market value of US$ 14.7 billion, followed by Asia with US$ 12.2 billion, which grew into the second- largest market, overtaking Europe. In Europe, the market was worth US$ 10.5 billion and other markets were worth US$ 8.2 billion.

2. Europe
The European market spearheads the latest global refrigeration industry trends. The accelerated implementation of F-gas phase-out Regulations in Europe has promoted development in the refrigeration market. Natural refrigerants such as CO2 have been favored by the entire industry, providing a good opportunity to upgrade entire refrigeration systems.

3. China and India
Asia is a big and attractive market. China and India, given their large populations and rapid economic growth, have offered strong momentum to the growth of the global cold chain industry, clocking growth rates of 15.1 and 14.3% respectively, much higher than other newly-emerging industrial countries.

4. United States
With the launch of Amazon Go with cash-free payment, the digital transformation of convenience retailers in United States is accelerating. Commercial real estate service provider JLL has released the U.S. grocery store tracker report 2019, which shows that, compared with the previous year, the floor area of U.S. grocery stores in 2018 increased by 29.4%.

5. Panasonic Cold Chain Business Zooms into the Future
In April 2019, Panasonic established two in-house companies, the US Company that controls North America and the China and Northeast Asia Company that controls China, to create an organizational structure that further promotes business focusing on regional strategies. As a result, U.S. display case manufacturer Hussmann became a part of the US Company, while Panasonic Appliances Cold Chain (Dalian) (PAPCCDL) and Panasonic Appliances Refrigeration System (Dalian) (PAPRSDL) in Dalian of China became parts of China and Northeast Asia Company. After about a year and half from the change, JARN interviewed Hiroyuki Tominaga, director, Cold Chain Business Division, Appliances Company, Panasonic, and asked about the development status of Panasonic’s cold chain business and the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic.
