1. U.S. Unitary AC Increases 5.1%
The Air-Conditioning, Heating, and Refrigeration Institute (AHRI) announced that U.S. shipments of U.S. shipments of central air conditioners and air-source heat pumps (ASHPs) totaled 902,546 units in September 2020, up 47.1% from 613,607 units shipped in September 2019. Year-to-date (September 2020) combined shipments of central air conditioners and ASHPs increased 5.1%, to 7,338,953 units, up from 6,984,349 units shipped during the same period in 2019.

2. European Commission Launches Renovation Wave
The European Commission (EC) launched a renovation wave and a new European Bauhaus, aiming to drum up support for plans to cut emissions from buildings and reduce energy bills. The EC plans to double the European Union’s (EU’s) annual rate of energy-related building renovations, which is currently just 1%, upgrading 35 million buildings by 2030.

3. Clean RACs & Ventilation Highlighted in COVID-19 Pandemic Context
After the expansion of COVID-19, recently, there have been scattered news reports in Japan about heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) equipment designed to improve IAQ and strong sales of air purifiers. In 2020, Daikin launched a room air conditioner (RAC) with a ventilation function at a relatively early stage after the outbreak of COVID-19. Mitsubishi Electric is releasing new models and the IAQ-related feature of these models is Pure Mist, charged water particles, which suppress the activity of airborne bacteria, viruses, molds, and pollen. Panasonic has released the Eolia series RAC and a humidified air purifier that enable the linkage through Internet of Things (IoT).

4. China’s Food Retail Market Accelerates Realignments
At present, the Chinese fresh food market has established a unique new retail style that combines online and offline. By 2012, China’s fresh food retail market was dominated by offline stores. Since 2012, comprehensive e-commerce platforms such as JD.com and Alibaba have begun to enter the fresh food business and have actively invested in cold chain infrastructure facilities. So far, more than a dozen fresh retail outlets, with different focuses such as food service and delivery service as well as unmanned stores and community stores, have been launched.

5. Mayekawa Develops an Industrial Heat Pump for High-temperature Heating
Mayekawa is carrying out the development of an industrial heat pump capable of realizing temperatures of up to 200ºC for heating, and heating an object from 80 to 180ºC, as an enterprise joining the Thermal Management Materials and Technology Research Association (TherMAT) established in October 2013. It is a part of the ‘Research and Development Project on Innovative Thermal Management Materials and Technologies’ being promoted by New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization (NEDO).
