1. The overall global air conditioner market in 2020
As the pandemic eased in the second half of 2020, the room air conditioner (RAC) market recovered greatly, but the packaged air conditioner (PAC) market recovered very slowly. The overall global air conditioner market in 2020 has continued to decline compared with 2019, registering a decrease of 8.9% over 2019, with sales amounting to 119.07 million units.

2. United States
Although the United States has been hit by the pandemic, working at home has stimulated demand for mini-splits and window-type RACs. The United States defines air conditioners as an essential business, so there is basically no interruption in air conditioner manufacturing and sales. According to the statistics issued by AHRI in October 2020, the unitary market has grown by 8.9% year on year. JARN estimates that single-split type and window type RACs in the United States increased by 11.0 and 8.0% in 2020, respectively.

3. China
According to data from China Market Monitor, during the period spanning January to November 2020, the cumulative retail sales of air conditioners reached 48.65 million units, a year-on-year decline of 16.7%. Of them, online sales accounted for 23.45 million units, a year-on-year decline of 5.4%, and offline sales reached 25.20 million units, a year-on-year decline of 25.0%.

4. Europe
Excluding Russia and Turkey, JARN estimates that the air conditioner market in Europe has declined slightly compared with 2019, with a decrease of only 2.1%, but a decrease of 12.2% was seen in the PAC market. The suspension of economic activities in parts of Europe generated shock waves across the air conditioner market.

5. Japan
According to statistics from the Japan Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Industry Association (JRAIA), RACs in 2020 are estimated to have reached a total of 10.1 million units. Although the RAC market in the first half of 2020 was hard-hit because of the impact of the pandemic, it began to rally in June.
