<January Special edition-World air conditioner market in 2020>
1. SOUTHEAST ASIA
In a nutshell, the RAC market in Southeast Asia decreased by 36% in the first half of 2020. In the second half of the year, recovery was insufficient, so in the whole year 2020, the RAC market in Southeast Asia decreased by 17.7% year on year to 6.36 million units. Construction projects continue to be postponed, and some were even frozen. Sales to restaurants and other stores are sluggish. Because of the poor cash flow of restaurants, the replacement of PACs has been postponed repeatedly. In 2020, the PAC market in Southeast Asia decreased by 25.9%.

2. INDIA
The peak months for sale of RACs in India are March to June. Due to the pandemic leading to a stringent lockdown from March, the peak months’ sales were badly hit. The decline in secondary sales from channel partners to consumers was 52% in March, almost 100% in April, 63% in May, 27% in June, and 8% in July. Backed by attractive festival discounts and the increased consumer preference for ecommerce, the demand picked up with 16% growth over 2019 in August, while September showed huge growth of 41% in secondary sales. Overall, secondary sales showed a decline of about 40% from January to September 2020 compared with the same period of 2019, and the whole year is expected to close with a 38% decline.

3. OCEANIA
In 2020, the Australian RAC market was expected to grow by 5.6%, and the market size was forecast to reach 797,000 units. Increasing demand for renewal and the use of reversible air conditioners for heating purposes have driven the air conditioner market. The impact of the pandemic has delayed engineering projects, but the PAC market increased by 6.7% over 2019, reaching 116,000 units.

4. MIDDLE EAST
JARN estimates that the RAC market in the Middle East grew slightly by 0.7% compared with 2019, reaching 5.11 million units. Affected by the decline in crude oil prices, the capital turnover of construction and retail industries has deteriorated, construction projects have stopped, and it is difficult to invest in new PACs. Therefore, in the Middle East, the impact of the pandemic has exceeded that in Europe, and the PAC market decreased by 15.9%.

5. LATIN AMERICA
The economic recession in Latin America over the past four years has prompted many global companies including the United States and Japan to reduce their investment in the region. But Chinese manufacturers showed strong performance in Latin America because China is seeing an increasing influence in this region. Latin American countries use different electricity frequencies and voltages, which complicates product strategies. Meanwhile, the market size of each country on a product basis is not very large, so manufacturers are not aggressively investing in development. Against this backdrop, many manufacturers purchase products from Chinese manufacturers on an OEM basis. In countries like Panama and Colombia, leading professional air conditioner stores, namely air conditioner distributors, are selling products under their original brands, most of which are also OEM products from China.
