UK’s Renewable Energy Outpaces Fossil Fuels

Analysis by Ember reveals that a major milestone was reached in 2020 in the United Kingdom: renewables overtook fossil fuels as the main source of electricity. With coal power already near zero, fossil gas dipped to a five-year low in 2020 thanks to growth in wind power and below-average demand due to the COVID-19 pandemic. A record 42% of the United Kingdom’s electricity was generated by renewables in 2020, compared with 41% by fossil fuels. Nuclear plants generated the remaining 17%.
