1. Chemours to Expand Opteon Capacity in Texas to Meet Growing Needs
On July 28, 2022, Chemours announced it will be expanding its Chemours Opteon YF (HFO-1234yf) capacity to help meet customer needs as they continue transitioning to lower global warming potential (GWP) refrigerants. The refrigerants manufactured by Chemours in Ingleside, Texas, will be delivered to a rapidly growing base of customers around the world. In the mobile air conditioning market, the number of vehicles on U.S. roads using HFO-1234yf is estimated to be at least 80 million. Since the opening of the production facility, several equipment manufacturing companies have also selected Opteon products for residential and commercial HVAC applications.

2. U.S. DPA Invokes for Heat Pump and Clean Energy Manufacturing
On June 6, U.S. President Joe Biden invoked the Defense Production Act (DPA) to expand domestic manufacturing of clean energy technologies. These technologies cover five categories: 1) heat pumps, 2) solar, 3) insulation, 4) transformers and electric grid components, and 5) electrolyzers, fuel cells, and platinum group metals. The DPA gives the president the authority to issue an executive order that requires private companies to prioritize and fulfill federal government contracts. In other words, through the DPA, the Biden administration is effectively ordering heat pump manufacturers to manufacture heat pumps, and the government is the guaranteed buyer.

3. Daikin Europe Invests €300 Million in New Polish HP Heating Factory
On July 7, 2022, Daikin Europe announced it will invest €300 million (about US$ 305.7 million) to establish a new factory in Łódź, Poland, which will be Daikin’s first production base in the country. The new factory will manufacture residential heat pump units and start operations in July 2024, in addition to the existing European production bases in Belgium, the Czech Republic, and Germany.

4. How Long will China’s Strong AC Exports to Russia Continue?
This year, the Russian air conditioner market presented good conditions for high growth: high temperatures came earlier than usual, full lifting of restrictions against the pandemic took place, and the market featured not-so-large inventory from last year. During January to May this year, China exported about 2.2 million air conditioners to Russia, an increase of 63% over the same period of last year, according to China Customs.
