Air Purifier Sales Boom in Face of Rising Pollution

2022-12-29
As the air quality of Delhi National Capital Region (NCR) and the surrounding area has been touching alarming levels in November, sales of air purifiers are going up and some of the manufacturers are expecting double‑digit growth this season. Air purifiers, which have a market size below Indian rupee (INR) 5 billion (about US$ 61.7 million), are sold primarily in Tier‑1 metropolitan cities. Their demand goes up in November and December, when the air quality index (AQI) touches alarming levels.
According to the latest data from Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB), a thick layer of smog continues to cover Delhi during these two months, and the overall AQI remains in the ‘hazardous’ category. AQI between 401 and 500 is considered to be hazardous.
The air purifier business came into the spotlight around eight years ago when the AQI level of Delhi NCR and its adjoining area started touching alarming levels in November and December. Several companies have jumped into this category since then.
