1. Fujitsu General Starts ATW Heat Pump Production in Europe
In December 2022, Fujitsu General established a joint venture (JV), FGAHP, with France-based Groupe Atlantic (GA) for the manufacture of ATW heat pumps in Europe. The new plant was set up in the premises of Societe Industrielle de Chauffage (SIC) in Billy-Berclau, France. SIC is a 100% subsidiary of GA and manufactures boilers and other heating-related equipment. Within FGAHP, Fujitsu General holds a 51% share and the remaining 49% share is held by SIC.

2. Global Energy Crisis Driving a Surge in Heat Pumps
Worldwide sales of heat pumps are set to soar to record levels in the coming years as the global energy crisis accelerates their adoption, the International Energy Agency (IEA) says in its new report titled ‘The Future of Heat Pumps’ released on November 30, 2022.  Annual sales of heat pumps in the EU could rise to 7 million units by 2030 – up from 2 million units in 2021 – if governments succeed in hitting their emissions reduction and energy security goals.

3. Area Has Solutions to Reduce Energy Costs & Carbon Footprints
Established in Barcelona, Spain, in 1986, Area Cooling Solutions has been supplying HVAC&R solutions such as condensing units and compressors across Europe. At Chillventa 2022 held in Germany last October, it attracted many visitors. After witnessing Area’s success at the exhibition, JARN interviewed Josep Ventura, chief executive officer (CEO) of the company, to hear about its business performances with its latest solutions including those exhibited at Chillventa.

4. EPA Proposes Rule Banning R410A and Other Refrigerants in 2025
On December 9, 2022, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) proposed a rule under the American Innovation and Manufacturing (AIM) Act that authorizes the EPA to limit or prohibit use of hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs) in line with the Kigali Amendment. The proposed rule applies to HFC refrigerants used in refrigeration, air conditioning, and heat pumps as well as in certain foams and aerosol products. The HFC phasedown pursued by the U.S. government targets a 40% reduction in 2024 and an 85% reduction in 2036.

5. Midea Jinzhou Industrial Park Completed and Put into Operation
Boasting a total investment of RMB 2.13 billion (about US$ 305.0 million), the MBT Jinzhou Industrial Park project mainly develops variable refrigerant flow (VRF) units, filling gaps in the Jinzhou home appliance industry in the air conditioner segment, stimulating clustering development of relevant supporting enterprises, making it the largest research and development (R&D) and manufacturing base for MBT Division in the domestic market. When in full capacity, the project will see an annual production value of up to RMB 15 billion (about US$ 2.15 billion), with an annual production capacity amounting to 10 million units.
