1. European Retail Industry Accelerates Decarbonization - Report on EuroShop 2023
After three years of suspension, EuroShop, the World’s No. 1 Retail Trade Fair, returned to Düsseldorf, Germany, from February 26 to March 2. EuroShop 2023 attracted a total of more than 81,000 trade visitors who witnessed the latest trends in the retail industry presented by 1,830 exhibitors. Despite the chilly weather, Messe Düsseldorf was effervescent and packed with visitors, exhibitors, and reporters from all five continents.

2. Midea Successfully Holds Second MBT True Conference
On February 23 to 24, Midea successfully held the ‘Second Midea Building Technologies (MBT) True Conference’ in Shanghai, in three forms: offline forums, an exhibition, and online global live broadcasting. The conference explored the future trends and development directions of digital and low-carbon buildings in the context of China’s ‘Double Carbon’ goal, which aims to reach peak carbon use by 2030 and become carbon neutral by 2060, showing the important journey of smart buildings from release of the concept to realization.

3. Carrier Adds R 515 B Refrigerant Option to AquaEdge Chillers
Carrier has announced that its AquaEdge 19MV oil-free water-cooled centrifugal chiller is now available with R515B refrigerant in addition to R134a and R513A. At 299, R515B refrigerant has the lowest global warming potential (GWP) of the three available refrigerants. It is a hydrofluoroolefin (HFO) azeotropic blend with a non-combustible (A1) safety rating.

4. Heat Pump Boom Unfurls across Europe in 2022
The European Heat Pump Association (EHPA) reported that a record number of heat pumps sales has been reached in 2022: around 3 million heat pumps used for heating were sold, based on early data from 16 markets in Europe. This indicates an increase of 38% compared with 2021, which in turn demonstrated a 34% year-on-year increase. Sales in 2022 raised the total number heat pumps in Europe to around 20 million.

5. Hitachi Brand Scroll Compressors Go Down in History and Evolve Further
In 1983, Hitachi, the predecessor of Hitachi-Johnson Controls Air Conditioning, succeeded in the commercialization and mass production of scroll compressors as compressors for commercial air conditioners, for the first time in the world. On the 40th anniversary of that achievement, JARN interviewed Shoji Akiyama, chief executive officer (CEO), Hitachi-Johnson Controls Air Conditioning, to hear about the company’s scroll compressor business in detail.
