1. NY State Bans Natural Gas and Other Fossil Fuels in New Buildings
On May 2, the New York Senate and Assembly passed the state budget, which contains a provision banning gas cooking stoves and furnaces as well as propane heating in most new residential buildings. New York City passed a similar ban on natural gas hookups in new buildings in 2021, which is set to go into effect in phases in 2024 and 2027, for buildings under seven stories and taller buildings, respectively. The new legislation included in the state budget approved on May 2 applies across New York State.

2. Trane Acquires MTA to Expand Industrial Process Cooling Solutions
In May 2023, Trane Technologies acquired MTA, an Italian-based manufacturer and distributor of sustainable solutions in industrial process cooling, air conditioning and air treatment. By providing process chillers and an expanded rental and services business, MTA will strengthen Trane’s Commercial HVAC ability to bring efficient sustainable solutions to the pharmaceutical, food and beverage, and automotive industries in key markets.

3. Turkish VRF Market in 2022
The Turkish variable refrigerant flow (VRF) market witnessed steady growth in 2022. In recent years, many global and domestic companies in Turkey have made significant investments in air conditioning business including VRF production to increase their capacities. Many new production facilities and research and development (R&D) centers continue to open.

4. UK Extends Boiler Upgrade Scheme until 2028
The UK government decided to extend its Boiler Upgrade Scheme incentive until 2028 according to its Heat Pump Investment Roadmap published in April 2023. Since heat pumps have a key role to play in decarbonizing heating across the country, the UK government aims to increase the number of heat pump installations from 55,000 a year in 2021 to 600,000 a year by 2028, and up to 1.9 million a year by 2035.

5. GMCC & Welling Attends Compilation of the AC&R White Paper in China
On March 30, the ‘White Paper on the Development of China’s Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Industry in 2022’, which was compiled by the China Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Industry Association (CRAA), was officially released. GMCC and Welling has been deeply involved in the planning and formulation of this White Paper.  As for research and development (R&D) of rotary air conditioning compressors applying environmentally friendly R290 refrigerant, GMCC and Welling became involved in R290 refrigerant development as early as 2004, and it has become a core objective of the acceleration of the R290 substitution process. Currently, GMCC and Welling owns a comprehensive R290 refrigerant production line and product portfolio.
