1. World ATW Heat Pump Market in 2023 - OVERVIEW
JARN’s database shows that the global air-to-water (ATW) heat pump market in 2023 increased slightly by 0.2% year on year, reaching 4.96 million units. In 2023, the ATW heat pump industry, a sunrise sector, encountered an unprecedented policy vortex in Europe, and that market experienced its first major setback. With the exception of double-digit negative growth in Europe, the global market has continued to grow. Among markets, China, the largest market, continues to maintain stable growth, helping global ATW heat pump sales to maintain a marginal increase in 2023.

2. EUROPE
According to JARN’s projections, the European ATW heat pump market was anticipated to have experienced a double-digit contraction in 2023, dropping to around 1.50 million units. The impact of this downturn varies across the continent, largely due to divergent national subsidy policies. Italy was projected to experience the steepest decline within the European market.

3. JAPAN
According to the Japan Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Industry Association (JRAIA) statistics, the Japanese Eco Cute market in 2023 amounted to 631,616 units, down 9.2% year on year. Although this indicates a decrease, it is likely due to the significant growth rate achieved in 2022. Since Eco Cute was first commercialized in the world in 2001, demand has been on the rise, and replacement demand is now becoming more prominent. The Heat Pump and Thermal Storage Technology Center of Japan (HPTCJ) announced that the cumulative number of units shipped exceeded 9 million at the end of August 2023.

4. China
In China, ATW heat pump systems are gaining recognition in the context of China’s ‘Double Carbon’ policy that targets a carbon peak by 2030 and carbon neutrality by 2060. In 2023, the Chinese ATW heat pump market increased by 6.6% year on year to about 2.47 million units, according to JARN’s estimates.

5. Achieving Carbon Neutrality with Heat Pump Technology and Energy Management
The Consortium for the Research Strategy of Next-generation Heat Pump Technology under the umbrella of Sustainable Energy & Environmental Society Open Innovation Research Organization (SEES), Waseda University, was established in 2020 in Japan to develop strategic research on heat pump-related technologies. JARN interviewed Prof. Kiyoshi Saito, consortium president, and asked him about the importance, issues, and future prospects of heat pumps
