2. Development of Next-generation Refrigerants
Hydrofluoroolefins (HFOs) and their blends are being considered as next-generation refrigerants to replace HFC refrigerants, and various types have been proposed by companies.  Although non-flammability is ideal for refrigerants, many of them have mild flammability. Room air conditioners (RACs) and packaged air conditioners (PACs) are already being converted to use R32 mildly flammable refrigerant. The use of R32 in variable refrigerant flow (VRF) systems is also being considered, but ensuring safety is an issue due to the large charging volume. In addition, risk assessment of R290 with flammability is underway for small-capacity air conditioning systems.
