* Europe (VRF)
VRF systems have gradually come to be recognized within the European air conditioner industry as superior to chiller systems. VRF demand expanded in regions that experienced solid economic recovery and grew slightly overall. European VRF market scale was less than 117,000 units in 2013, almost the same level as 2012. The market is expected to grow 5% year on year in 2014.

1. Assessing Low-GWP, Mildly Flammable Refrigerants
Even when the GWP value is low, if the resulting system the refrigerant is used in is inefficient, the amount of energy consumed (in the form of electricity or fossil fuel) will inevitably be high; therefore, the GWP value alone is not necessarily a determinant of environmental friendliness. Refrigerants must also be considered in terms of their safety, i.e., toxicity and flammability.
